Understanding the Three Levels of Reiki

The Journey of Reiki Mastery

Embarking on the path to becoming a Reiki practitioner often starts with limited knowledge about the various levels of Reiki mastery. Initially, approaching this journey with an open mind can be beneficial. However, having a foundational understanding of these levels is advantageous for both aspiring practitioners and those seeking to work with a Reiki healer.

The Three Levels of Reiki

Reiki training typically encompasses three (sometimes four) distinct levels. Each level is built around the principles of attunement (a ceremony of empowerment), education, and practice. The concept of attunement sets Reiki apart from other healing touch and energy practices. Known as Reiju in Japanese, attunement involves a Reiki master performing a ceremony to open and expand the main energy channels in the student's body. This allows the universal energy (Qi/Chi/Ki) to flow more freely and deeply, clearing blockages and leading to significant personal growth. The energy transfer from master to student during attunement is a lifelong gift.

While Level 1 and Level 2 training can sometimes be completed over a weekend for a few hundred dollars, the Reiki master level usually demands a more intensive and extended period of study.

A Closer Look at Each Reiki Level

Reiki Level 1: The First Degree (Shoden)

Level 1 serves as the initiation into Reiki and is accessible to anyone. The primary goal at this stage is to open the energy channels on a physical level, enabling practitioners to connect with the universal life force energy. This energy flows from the cosmos through the crown of the head and down to the heart and hands. Reiki masters often emphasize the importance of self-Reiki at this stage, encouraging students to work on their own healing. The Level 1 course typically includes an introduction to the history of Reiki.

What to Expect During a Level 1 Attunement:

Originally, the Level 1 attunement was given in four separate sessions, but many Reiki masters now offer it in a single session. After attunement, practitioners may experience sensations such as tingling, coolness, or heat in their palms. Emotional responses like anxiousness, exhaustion, and sadness are also common. Due to the intensity of this process, a waiting period of 21 days to three months is recommended before proceeding to Level 2.

Reiki Level 2: The Second Degree (Okuden)

At Level 2, practitioners learn to perform Reiki on others and deepen their energy channels. This stage introduces the five Reiki symbols, each representing different energies (power, harmony, distance, mastery, and completion). These symbols are used to integrate Reiki energy into daily life and can facilitate long-distance healing.

What to Expect During a Level 2 Attunement:

The Level 2 attunement typically involves a single session focusing on the heart chakra, the bridge between physical and spiritual energy centers. Practitioners are encouraged to look inward and fully engage with the heart's energy. A period of six months to a year is recommended between Level 2 and the master training to fully absorb the lessons learned.

Reiki Level 3: The Third Degree (Shinpiden) & Reiki Master

In some teachings, the Third Degree and Reiki Master are considered the same, while others separate them. The Master Level is traditionally seen as the teacher's level, where practitioners can attune new Reiki practitioners. Achieving this level signifies a deep commitment to Reiki practice. However, many who receive the master attunement may not feel ready to attune others, leading to a distinction between the Third Degree and Reiki Master.

Choosing the Right Path

The journey to Reiki mastery is diverse, with various teaching methods and timelines. It's crucial to research and select a format and instructor that align with personal and spiritual goals. The three levels of Reiki provide a structured path to mastering this healing practice, guiding practitioners through a profound personal and spiritual transformation.
