What Is Reiki?

Reiki is an ancient form of energy healing with roots in Japanese culture that focuses on channeling universal life force energy—known as ki or qi—to improve well-being and alleviate ailments. The term "Reiki" combines the Japanese words "rei" (universal) and "ki" (vital life force energy), and practitioners describe it as a form of acupuncture without needles.

During a Reiki session, practitioners place their hands on or just above different parts of the body to detect and alleviate energy blockages that may be causing health issues or negative life circumstances. Sessions typically last 30 minutes to an hour in a tranquil environment, with the practitioner focusing on positive intentions for the client's healing.

History of Reiki

Modern Reiki was founded by Makao Usui in Japan in the early 1900s. Usui's student, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, later taught Reiki to a Japanese-American woman, Hawayo Takata, who brought it to the West in the 1930s after experiencing profound healing. Despite anti-Japanese sentiments during World War II, Takata continued teaching Reiki, adapting the teachings for her English-speaking students. Today, thousands practice Usui Reiki and its various branches globally.

Benefits of Reiki

Reiki is primarily known for promoting relaxation and reducing stress. Studies have shown that it can:

  • Improve mood and sleep quality

  • Boost heart health after a heart attack by increasing heart rate variability

  • Alleviate physical pain and enhance quality of life, especially for cancer patients, post-surgery recovery, and chronic conditions like arthritis

Risks and Caveats

Reiki is generally safe, with no reported adverse effects. However, it should complement—not replace—medical treatments. Clients should research practitioners' training and credentials to find trustworthy professionals.

While some studies have questioned Reiki's efficacy due to inconsistent results, proponents advocate for more rigorous research to understand its potential benefits.

Finding a Practitioner

To locate a certified Reiki practitioner, consider resources like the Reiki Alliance, the International Reiki Association, or the International Association of Reiki Practitioners.

Based in Ancient Wisdom

Reiki is a complementary therapy rooted in ancient wisdom that focuses on balancing the body's energy for improved health and well-being. Despite mixed scientific findings, many believe in its potential, and it's increasingly offered alongside conventional treatments in hospitals across the U.S.
